Weighbridge software for sugar mills

Weighbridge software for sugar mills takes the weight directly from the indicator, ties it to the grower, plot and vehicle, and passes it to cane billing with no retyping. Choose a product that blocks typed weights, keeps every correction visible, and still runs the gate when a link fails.

What weighbridge software for sugar mills does

Weighbridge software for sugar mills records each cane load at the gate. It captures gross and tare, works out the net weight and prints a slip.

That weight sets the farmer bill, the harvest and transport bill and part of the crush figure. A small error repeats across thousands of loads.

Many weighbridge packages are described around trucks and material movement. A mill needs more. Each load must tie to a grower, plot, variety, permit and season. The queue is also mixed, with tractors, trailers and trucks in one line.

Four levels of automation

Avery Weigh-Tronix says its SmarTower unit combines RFID, a camera, position sensors and voice guidance, and links to ERP systems such as SAP and Oracle. WeighMAST lists RFID, camera and unmanned options on a software directory. We found no independent test of these products at an Indian sugar mill, so ask for evidence from cane.

What the law still requires

Software does not replace verification. Section 24 of the Legal Metrology Act requires a weight or measure used in a transaction to be verified before use. Under rule 27 of the General Rules, items outside the listed classes are re-verified every twelve months. An item repaired or reinstalled before the due date must be re-verified and stamped before use.

Ask whether any installed device touches the instrument or its seals. A reader that only receives the output is a different matter from work on load cells. A July 2026 amendment also reduced the standard weights needed once an instrument passes a repeatability test, so ask your Legal Metrology office how it applies to your bridge.

Scrutiny is rising. In October 2026, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi asked Karnataka to review alleged irregularities in cane weighing. In Vijayapura, police alleged in 2026 that fake weighment records and bills involved about Rs 12.33 crore over six seasons. That case is under investigation. The reports describe false records and tokens, which is why data controls matter as much as the scale.

Controls to demand

  • The operator cannot type a weight
  • A weight is accepted only after it holds stable for a set time
  • Manual entry needs a separate permission, a reason and an approval
  • The raw reading, device and time are stored with each weighment
  • Corrections never overwrite, and both versions stay visible
  • One vehicle cannot hold two open weighments
  • Tare history is kept per vehicle, with alerts outside tolerance
  • Slip numbers run without gaps
  • Token issue, weighing and payment release sit with different people
  • No one can change a weight in the database without a trace

Plan for failure at the gate

Cane cannot wait, so agree what the gate does before the season starts. Power, network and server faults will happen during crushing.

  • Keep numbered paper slips under control, with a named owner.
  • Enter paper slips later as manual weighments, with approval.
  • Check for duplicates on entry.
  • Record when and why the system was down.
  • Review manual entries and corrections every day.

How to choose

Ask a cloud vendor what the gate needs from the internet. Ask an on-premise vendor who restores the server at 2 am. Then run these tests at your own site.

  • Connect to every bridge you own, including older indicators.
  • Run a busy hour's loads at your real rate.
  • Reconcile a day's weighments to bills, line by line.
  • Find out who holds the protocol details for your indicator.
  • Get night support during crushing written into the contract.
  • Ask how seasonal operators are charged.
  • Tie the final payment to a site acceptance test.

Where SugarOS fits

SugarOS is a sugar mill ERP covering survey to ledger. Each bridge is configured by plant. A weight is accepted only after it holds stable, the operator cannot type one, corrections keep both versions, and paper slips cover outages. There are no per-user licence fees. Your bridge's connection needs its own test, so ask us to show it on site.

Frequently asked questions

Does software make a weighbridge legally compliant?

No. Verification concerns the instrument, and rule 27 applies however the weight reaches your software. Software adds evidence and control over the data.

Do we need RFID from day one?

No. A direct link with stable capture removes the biggest manual step. Add vehicle identity once the basics work, and test tags on your own mixed fleet.

Can we keep our existing bridge?

Often yes. Ask what your indicator can output, and whether any work on the bridge would need re-verification.

Should weighbridge software be separate from the ERP?

It can be, if the link is reliable and no one can alter data on the way. One system removes that link, while a separate product may suit a mill keeping an existing gate setup.
