SugarOS vs Tally for sugar mills

SugarOS published this comparison, so read it as one vendor's view: Tally is widely used accounting and inventory software, while SugarOS is a sugar mill ERP that also runs cane, gate, factory and distillery records. Tally may be enough for a unit that needs accounts and has other systems for cane, and SugarOS may suit a mill that wants one record from weighment to ledger.

SugarOS vs Tally: about this comparison

SugarOS published this comparison. SugarOS belongs to Anantara Holding Private Limited, so we have an interest in the outcome.

This SugarOS vs Tally comparison uses Tally Solutions' own pages, checked on 1 November 2026. Not stated means the page we read, or this article, makes no claim. Ask the vendor, including us.

The two products have different jobs. Tally is general business software. SugarOS is a sugar mill ERP covering survey to ledger plus distillery, cogen, HR, payroll, fleet, assets, documents and shareholders.

What Tally does well

Tally's strength in accounting is real. Tally says nearly 2.7 million businesses worldwide use it, and many Indian accountants know it well. That makes hiring and training easier.

Tally says TallyPrime handles accounting, inventory, GST filing, e-invoices, e-way bills, TDS, TCS, connected banking and payroll with PF and ESI. For manufacturers, it describes bills of materials, manufacturing journals and job work.

Its pricing is clear. Tally lists Silver at Rs 22,500 and Gold at Rs 67,500 plus GST as one-time licences, with Gold allowing unlimited users on a local network. Tally says it also offers an Edit Log release that keeps the audit trail on at all times.

It can also be extended. Tally offers the TDL language, TallyShop add-ons and authorised partners for custom work.

What a mill needs beyond accounts

A mill's hardest records sit upstream of the ledger. They include plots, permits, weighments, FRP, the 14-day due date, recovery and excise. The Tally pages we checked do not mention cane, weighbridges or FRP. A partner may build such work in TDL, or a mill may use a separate cane system.

If a mill keeps separate systems, someone reconciles them. An auditor who wants to trace one grower's payment back to one weighment then has to leave the ledger. That is the cost to weigh against Tally's simplicity.

Using the two together

Many mills will ask whether they can keep Tally and add a cane system. This can work as a stage. Agree how entries post, at what level of detail, and who reconciles them each week. Ask any cane vendor, including us, to show the posting format your auditor will accept.

When Tally may suit better

  • You run a small unit, or need only accounts and inventory.
  • Another system already handles cane and the gate, and reconciliation works well.
  • Your accounts team is trained on Tally and you cannot change this season.
  • You want a low, published licence cost.
  • A group decision already places your finance on Tally.

When SugarOS may suit better

  • You want one record from plot to weighment to bank to ledger.
  • Your weekly reconciliation between systems takes real staff time.
  • You want typed weights blocked and FRP rules held as dated data.
  • You run a distillery or cogen unit and want it on the same books.
  • Your auditors want to drill from any account to its source document.

How to decide

  • List the mill needs that are manual today
  • Count the reconciliations you do each week
  • Ask your auditor which trail they want from ledger to weighment
  • Ask a Tally partner for a written cane scope, if you prefer that route
  • Test any ERP's GST and TDS output with your chief accountant
  • Avoid moving finance mid-year without a clean cut-off

Frequently asked questions

Can Tally run a sugar mill on its own?

Tally covers accounts, inventory and payroll well. The Tally pages we checked do not cover cane, weighbridges or FRP, so a mill would need other systems or partner work for those.

Is SugarOS accounting as strong as Tally?

Tally has a long record and wide use among accountants, and you should weigh that. Test SugarOS finance with your chief accountant and auditor on your own entries.

Can we keep Tally and use SugarOS?

We state no Tally link here, so ask us about your case. SugarOS has its own ledger, and running two ledgers needs a clear owner for reconciliation.

What about Tally's price?

Tally publishes its licence, renewal and add-on prices. Compare the full cost, including any custom work and the staff time spent on reconciliation.
